Mass Timber Multi-family Housing
Located in southeast Portland, Chiles House provides 27 affordable housing units for individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness and refugees. The project is the first affordable housing development to use cross-laminated timber (CLT) in the city of Portland. Open-air corridors connect the units and lead to a shared community room and courtyard. Four-stories of residential units will be accompanied by one level of retail space, below-grade bike parking and storage for residents.
Utilizing the sustainability and aesthetic of mass timber, the structure includes CLT decks with stick-framed walls, bringing the warmth of exposed timber to the units. Four-stories of residential units are accompanied by one level of retail space, and below-grade bike parking. Kalesnikoff provided the cross-laminated timber for this residential building. This choice of material reduces the building’s environmental impact but also resulted in a faster construction timeline. The project took less than a year to get from groundbreaking to completion. Chiles house optimizes mass timber’s aesthetic appeal with constructability and cost efficiency.
