Mass Timber a Natural Fit in Squamish
The Squamish Oceanfront Presentation Centre, designed by SLA Architects for developer, Matthew West and built with mass timber from Kalesnikoff, is a shining example of sustainable design used to create a structurally expressive space. This 16,478 square foot building combines modern materials with local materials, including yellow cedar and galvanized steel, echoing Squamish’s industrial history. With its open design and large windows, the building is filled with natural light, offering stunning views of Howe Sound, the Squamish Chief, and Shannon Falls. This project is a key part of the larger Oceanfront Squamish development. The facility is planned to serve as both a community gathering place and a visitor centre. It integrates sustainable construction methods using mass timber to reduce its environmental impact.
Kalesnikoff supplied the exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam used throughout the structure in a nod to the community’s heritage in forestry. Our team also provided Design Assist, 3D Modelling and Shop Drawings for this project as well as supplying hardware and mass timber. The use of mass timber connects the building to the natural environment, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Expansive glazing links the mass timber interior with Oceanfront Park, creating a seamless connection to the natural surroundings. The use of mass timber will provide a significant volume of net sequestered carbon which will reduce the building’s environmental impact.
